Art has long been a great way to provide some social commentary with an adorable twist, and one Maltese artist is proving just that with illustrations on post-its that are as simple as they are effective.

Paper Yellow opened her account back in January, and has since then posted 36 different illustrations. “It all started as a fun Inktober project where I would put up daily drawings of my mutuals who wanted a post-it portrait,” she told Lovin Malta. “Then, when that was over, I decided to keep the account and use it for whenever I wanted to complain or make a joke about something or share a random thought instead of writing a Facebook status.”

Anyone who spends more than a couple of seconds on Paper Yellow’s Instagram account will quickly see that materialise. In her posts, she frequently celebrates all things Maltese. On other occasions, she cheekily pokes fun of certain issues.

1. The purest show of affection

No greater love than this exists.

2. Malta’s weird relationship with corruption

Seriously though, those pesky neighbours always give each other 12 points.

3. That feel every single winter when all of Europe is under a beautiful blanket of snow but it’s still hot and dry in Malta

Hey, at least we’ve got noflakes.

4. A typical Facebook feed in Malta

It might say XXXL but it’ll fit me tighter than a crop top.

5. The national importance of one Gigi d’Agostino

“If the opening notes of L’Amour Toujours don’t turn you into a wild animal, the cops come and confiscate ur passport.”

6. Have you ever noticed how many Maltese people wear those white and red Levi’s tops?

Paper Yellow has noticed… and she’s added another vital L-brand for the country.

7. Malta’s very efficient at turning a singer into a national icon almost overnight

You guys, Laurel + Yanny < Emma. Like, duh.

8. Malta’s latest migrant controversy also got the PY treatment…

… and the shade is real.

9. When you get an awesome tan and you’re not sure whether it’s the sun or your recent added intake

Girl look how fucking orange you look.

10. Re-analysing scenes from Dejjem Tieg?ek Becky should become a series of its own

“I think about this a lot,” Paper Yellow started on an Instagram post with four different panel-illustrations. “That episode of Dejjem Tieghek Becky where Andre lipsyncs to I Am What I Am and there’s this deadly silence and then his homophobic dad gets up and starts clapping sternly but proudly. For me and many other sheltered nerds from the sticks, it was the first time we had ever seen A Gay (let alone a drag queen). The B in LGBT obvs stands for Becky. Happy pride month friends! You are cherished and loved!”

11. The ongoing tree-cutting controversy got a magical touch in a three-panel comic

“The only tree that could survive malta is the whomping willow from Harry Potter.”
