13 Amazing Family Friendly Spots You Must Take Your Kids To When Visiting Malta

Malta is quite the place to go on a family-friendly holiday. This year you might want to spend your summer vacation lying down on sandy beaches, appreciating nature and feeling the heat of the hot Maltese sun. Here’s our top places to go to if you want to enjoy Malta along with your kids.

1. Pjazza San Ġorġ

If you’re visiting Valletta with your family (which is a must) you really need to let your kids run free and go crazy at the Pjazza San Ġorġ dancing fountains. Let those little critters get wet and chase pigeons as you enjoy a nice ice cream or a cold refreshing beer on a bench opposite the Grand Master’s Palace.

2. Sandy Beaches

If you really want to enjoy Malta and relax in the sun with your kids, you really need to visit one of our numerous sandy beaches. Golden Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa and Għar Lapsi are among local favourites. If you personally don’t fancy sand that much, you could always opt to a safe but sandless location like Surfside in Sliema. 

3. Marsaskala Swings

Want to enjoy some traditional Maltese meals while looking at your children enjoy some good old Maltese swings? Head over to Marsaskala where numerous restaurants surround the large kid’s swings. Although it looks like the road is really close by, you can relax — it’s a gated area so children will not be crossing over to the boring side of the road at any time. 

4. Badger Racing 

An exciting and competitive activity where you can definitely see your kids laugh-screaming their way through the tracks. Badger Racing Malta have up to 17 different track layouts for you to choose from. A bar is also available on the premises along with a viewing gallery on the roof. 

5. BOV Adventure Park

The BOV Adventure Park is seriously a kid’s dream. The park is equipped with different swings, slides and whatever your children will enjoy doing. You could sit down and have a quiet picnic or take a walk at the giant Ta’ Qali National Park. 

6. San Anton Gardens

These lush gardens are the most beautiful in Malta. They were built by GrandMaster de Paule as an extension to his summer residence the San Anton Palace. Which you can also totally walk through to access the President’s Kitchen Garden

You could easily bump into a family of ducks, the local peacocks or the very cute turtles basking in the sun by one of the ponds. 

7. Barrakka Gardens

The Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens offer one of the best Grand Harbour views in Malta. They are built on top of bastions and are a peaceful place to relax at in the hustle and bustle of Valletta. 

8. Splash and Fun

Malta’s only waterpark is a great way to freshen up during one of our famous summer heatwaves. With numerous rides on it you and your family will surely enjoy the day spent here. There’a also children’s pools, dive pools and even kamikaze slides. 

9. Chadwick Lakes

No they’re not really lakes, they’re a complex system of dams and constructed in the late 19th Century. These lakes are abundant of indigenous plants, cool insects and an ample amount of tadpoles and frogs. If you’re lucky you can even spot a dragonfly chilling out by one of the dams. 

10. Toy Museums

You can find two of these on the Maltese islands — one in Xagħra, Gozo and the other one in Valletta. Both museums house a variety of peculiar toys. Some are nostalgic to the older generations while others might be creepy for the younger ones.

Visiting the Malta Toy Museum in Valletta will surely get you to reminisce as you look at the beautifully crafted matchbox cars, dolls,  model planes, boats and animals.

The Pomskizillious Museum of Toys in Gozo on the other hand displays stuff from the 18th century — including ativity scenes, Maltese dolls, clockwork tin toys, optical toys and even pressed paper scenes which are over a 100 years old. 

11. Bird Park Salina

The Salina Bird Park is home to over 200 species of birds and other animals which are not easy to spot when roaming around urban Malta. You can get to see migrant birds and even local ones. Storks, owls, cranes, flamingoes and even pelicans. 

You can get to see these lovely birds in their natural habitat and learn more about how they interact, hear their calls and song and learn about nests and stuff. 

12. Malta National Aquarium

The Malta National Aquarium houses some really weird things bro. From giant crabs to microscopic frogs, you can visit this place to look at the most Maltese fish ever — the lampuka. 

You can easily spend half a day going around this place and learning about Maltese sea-life. If you’re lucky enough you can even manage to see a live shark-feeding in the fish tunnel. If you do visit this Aquarium, make sure that you do not miss out the jellyfish section.

13. Popeye Village

The unmemorable 1980s musical production Popeye did no really leave any kind of imprint in anyone’s mind, but it sure left one at Anchor Bay in Mellieħa. You can visit the outlandish set and enjoy a couple of water rides, reenactments and joyrides.
