13 Things To Do While Stranded In Malta After Your Conference Was Relocated
So there’s been a miscommunication mishap of epic proportions, and a bunch of foreign academics have flown to Malta for a conference that is actually in… New York.
The conference was organised as part of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Instead of the actual thing, a ‘parallel event’ consisting of a live-stream of the New York conference, has been organised in Malta for the people who came over despite the location change.
Well, we can think of a few other parallel events that may act as a balm to the participants’ rightful frustration. Here goes.
1. Grab some Maltese grub
Maltese food is indulgent and rich in flavour. One fried-rabbit feast in your bellies and you’ll forget all about travelling half way across the world for nothing.
2. Enjoy the milder weather
New York just got over a snowstorm and is freezing AF at the moment. Maltese winters are a walk in the park compared to that kind of cold. Well, a walk in Mediterranean landscape.
3. Visit the Esplora centre
It’s new and science-y. You’ll love it!
4. Get wasted on fatty foods
Malta is a pro at guilty-pleasures. You’ve got to try the king of them all – our local savoury cheese or pea-filled pastries. You could make a day out of it with Lovin Malta’s pastizzi crawl!
5. Check out some of our galleries and museums
We have everything from ultra-weird, to mega-impressive.
6. Get to know our local talent
Combined with Malta’s most ardent obsession – the Eurovision.
7. Visit the capital
We know this may be a sore point seeing as the conference was meant to be held at the MCC, but Valletta has so much to offer. Walk around, catch some amazing sites, and stop for a restorative coffee.
8. Go to Gozo
If you need to unwind and get away from people – which, let’s face it, is what we would need if we were in your place – Gozo is the perfect place for you. It’s beautiful, quiet and we can give you a few tips on what’s best to do when you get there.
9. Get lost
Again, if it’s a solitary escape you’re after – we’ve got you covered. There are loads of awesome places you can visit to be alone with your thoughts about all the grant money that was wasted to come here.
10. Ditch the academia and have an evening of cocktails
So many great cocktail places to go to in Malta. Grab the rest of your group and drink this whole fiasco away.
11. Jazz it up
Go listen to some uplifting music in gorgeous venues and you’ll realise that life still makes sense sometimes.
12. Take a scenic tour
Grab a taxi and ask them to pick one of these stunning driving routes around the island. Just expense it back to whoever cocked this thing up in the first place…
13. Watch a winter sunset
Don’t let the sun set on your mood – yes you’re far away from your home and loved ones for no good reason, but you’re also in a beautiful, laid-back country and we’re really glad you came to visit. So take in the most beautiful moment of the Maltese day, and just think of this as a much needed holiday.
