Every year Maltese film-buffs look forward to an influx of new movies they can pour over, and 2017 looks like it’s gonna be one hell of a line-up.

Here are 15 films we think our readers should be looking out for in 2017.

1. The Greatest Showman on Earth

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Rebecca Ferguson and Michelle Williams

This stellar cast brings to life the story of American showman P.T. Barnum, founder of the circus that became the famous traveling Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. It will be out towards the end of 2017, so hopefully it will just about make it to Malta.

2. Red Sparrow

Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Joel Edgerton, Jeremy Irons and Matthias Schoenaerts.

Based on the book by Jason Matthews, Lawrence plays a trained seductress assassin. Intrigued? Yup, so are we. Keep your eye out for this towards the latter months of 2017.

3. The Great Wall

Starring: Matt Damon, Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal and Andy Lau.

The Maltese love an epic war film – think Gladiator, 300, etc. This promises to be another terrifying battle film set against the East’s most recognisable landmark. Definitely one to watch, and coming out pretty early in the year.

4. Logan

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant and Boyd Holbrook.

This is expected to be Jackman’s final run as Wolverine (weep), and the best yet – so we wouldn’t want anyone to miss out. Let’s give him a proper send off.

5. Kong: Skull Island

Starring: Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson and John Goodman.

Kong comes from the people behind 2014’s Godzilla and set in the Pacific during the thick of the Vietnam War. With a cast fully of superstars and generally such an epic subject, we’re sure Maltese audiences are going to love this.

6. The Fate of the Furious

Starring: Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez and Charlize Theron.

If you’re after a no-thinking, żinnati-packed flick, then this will be the one for you. The first movie since the death of Paul Walker, this addition to the epic series takes a different spin entirely as Vin Diesel plays the villain.

7. The Lost City of Z

Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland and Sienna Miller.

An exploration gone wrong with a group of hot AF people. We cannot wait to see this one.

8. The Circle

Starring: Emma Watson and Tom Hanks.

Based on the novel by David Eggers, The Circle chronicles tech worker Mae Holland as she joins a powerful internet company which starts out as an incredibly rewarding experience, but as she works there longer things start to fall apart. If you enjoyed Black Mirror then you’ll love this.

9. Wonder Woman

Starring: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright.

Hopefully reaching our shores at some point in summer, this film will give us everything we ever wanted to know about Wonder Woman. And anything with Robin Wright in it is basically gold.

10. Lady Macbeth

Most of us studied Macbeth in senior school or sixth form, so we’re all going to be feeling pretty smug when we can totally understand the subtexts in this one. Get ready for an intensity overload if the original Lady Macbeth is anything to go by.

11. Manchester By The Sea

Starring: Casey Affleck

An uncle is asked to take care of his teenage nephew after the boy’s father dies.

12. Moonlight

A timeless story of human self-discovery and connection, Moonlight chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighbourhood of Miami.

13. La La Land

Starring: Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone

A musical which tells the story of Mia, an aspiring actress, and Sebastian, a dedicated jazz musician, struggling to make ends meet while pursuing their dreams in a city known for destroying hopes and breaking hearts.

14. Paterson

Jim Jarmusch at his poetic best.

15. Dunkirk

Starring: Tom Hardy, Cilian Murphy and Kenneth Branagh

A Christopher Nolan classic with a stellar cast waiting. Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire and France are surrounded by the German army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.
