Now that weekend cleanups have become one of Malta’s newest (and best) trends, more keep cropping up at an awesomely regular rate.

Groups like Malta Clean Up, JCI Malta and Żibel are definitely leading the great initiative, and here are four upcoming events in April and May where you can do your part to make Malta way greener.

1. Saturday 29th April: Pembroke

Providing textile gloves, bags and water, Camilla Appelgren, Malta Clean Up and JCI Malta are looking for volunteers to join a cleanup at an area they say will definitely be part of the larger, national cleanup in 2018. The event is sponsored by Engel & Volker Sara Grech, as more and more companies are getting involved with this national initiative.

Attendees will need to bring a reusable water bottle, carton boxes to help collect any pieces of glass that might be found, and “a big smile”.

2. Sunday 30th April: L-Aħrax

Having recently collected 500kg of waste from Fomm ir-Riħ, Żibel are back at it again, this time heading to l-Aħrax in Mellieħa.

The organization is already looking into going bigger and better, and have teamed up with host of other NGOs, like Friends of the Earth Malta, BirdLife, fish4tomorrow, and Sharklab Malta. Valletta 2018 is taking care of the organization for it to coincide with the Valletta Green Festival, and it’s heartwarming to see larger organizations join great incentives like this.

3. Sunday 7th May: Manoel Island

Some of the cleanups that are being organized will not only help make Malta way greener, but will actually directly help certain businesses. Such is the case with next month’s cleanup being organized at Manoel Island, where the bar there, The Funky Monkey, has offered a helping hand with a fresh difference.

“The Funky Monkey will offer a free drink (Singha, which is a delicious Thai beer, water or soft drink) for all the people cleaning up,” MCU’s Camilla announced. “We are also together looking into how to solve the situation with litter at Manoel Island.”

And while most of the island is now private property, there’s still much to be done in the first part of the tiny spit of land. “The parking and the area around the Funky Monkey will take a full day at least”, she said.

Greenpak will also be setting up an information booth with recycling advisors on the day.

4. Thursday 11th May: Mistra

This coastal cleanup is being organized by BirdLife, the Malta National Aquarium, Maltaqua Dive Centre, Sharklab, and the U.S. Embassy Valletta.

Apart from the surrounding areas of Mistra Bay, volunteers will also be cleaning up the trash on the seabed, “in an effort to promote a healthy and productive marine environment, and to draw attention to the challenge of marine debris.”

As more cleanups continue to be organized, all these events can act as the perfect warmup to World Cleanup Day 2018, which needs 22,000 Maltese volunteers to go off as planned.
