Assuming you’ve been living on the rock as opposed to under it, you may have noticed the recent influx of gaming companies, affiliate of gaming companies, gaming universities, and gaming recruitment centres that have now become a big part of Malta.

We’re here to break down the changes that these companies have brought to our shores.

1. More foreigners

OK, let’s get the obvious one out of the way.

When a company moves country, a lot of the employees working at it may have the option to join the exciting venture. While some reject the call of international prospects, others embrace it.

Seeing as gaming companies in Malta are both huge and plentiful, this means a heavier-than-usual influx of foreigners. Most of them seem to be content with what the island has been able to offer.

2. Modern business practices

Gaming companies have placed the welcome mat out for the influx of modern business practices.

While in the past, a lot of traditional Maltese companies would expect their employees to work precise fixed hours, dress in prescribed (and perhaps restricted) work attire and conduct themselves like robots, this is all changing.

A lot of gaming companies open doors for their employees to be more relaxed at the workplace, especially through the amount of social gatherings and events they organise on a regular basis.

3. Higher wages

The legends are true; gaming companies pay well.

Fortunately or unfortunately, the Maltese people are finding this out the hard way. With even entry-level jobs at gaming companies offering a higher wage than many people would expect, a lot of the younger workforce are finding the opportunity of earning good money highly enticing.

As with some of the other points in this list, of course, this has not come without its own spat of controversy.

4. Property prices have gone up

As previously mentioned, the wages of individuals in the gaming industry are quite substantial, opening the doors for landlords around the island to take advantage of the situation.

Yes, we have limited space and Malta is not getting any bigger, and this situation has always been gradually building up, but many people – and experts – are sure that the introduction of the gaming companies added fuel to this fire. With certain central (and gaming industry-heavy) localities like G?ira, Sliema and Ta’ Xbiex, this eventuality is even more of a reality.

5. More foreign investment

The gaming industry has also brought with it the economic eyes of the world.

Many companies and cooperations are turning their attention to our island and looking for opportunities to invest.

While not everyone will agree that this is 100% good, it’s definitely a sizeable point of discussion.

6. Increased work opportunities

Gaming companies love energetic, talented and young employees. Giving out great opportunities to many students and young employees (both part-time and full-time) as a way to enter the business world is as great an attractor as it gets. And yes, the good cash helps!
