The date is Friday the 16th of August and the mood is probably hungover. Yesterday, the island’s celebration for the feast of Santa Marija culminated in an island-wide party. Whether you attended your village festa, met with friends to enjoy the public holiday, or stopped by Glitch or Summer Daze, most of us are feeling the affects of yesterday’s shenanigans today.

From fireworks to fancy facades, Malta and Gozo really went all out with their celebrations this year. And here are 7 photos that prove it.

1. Hundreds of people gathered to check out the Marija Assunta in Gozo

Tourists and locals alike watched in awe as the statue paraded through the Citadella, the same statue that emerges every year. Although we can’t say we blame them, she is a pretty awesome statue.

2. Insane fireworks before they reach their final form

3. And they’re insane in their final form too

You can’t deny the power of a good Queen-themed fireworks display. And fireworks exploding perfectly on time to a song is super pleasing. If anybody can tell me how they practice this let me know please, because I’m curious.

4. And they make for great photoshoot backgrounds

The bright colours and abundant amount of smoke and fog means that the more talented amongst us can grab shots as amazing as this one.

5. Things were getting lit in the daytime too

Marches and songs and drinks, lion statues and horse races.. it’s all bit much, but that’s the fun of it, isn’t it?

6. And if you were looking for something a bit quieter…

Traditional food, skills, and dances were presented over in Rabat, Gozo. A step away from the revelry and fireworks and into the island’s past.
