7 Painful Ways Maltese Men Objectify Women Online

Article Featured Image

Objectification is one of those pesky subjects some people try their best to ignore. Some of us even do it by mistake, not even realising that what they do or say is inadvertently making womenfolk feel iffy.

Here in Malta, women have to endure varying degrees of objectification to this very day, and we have yet to move away from a culture that doesn’t think some of the below are not okay. Here are seven painful ways Maltese men still objectify women by their words or actions, particularly online.

1. “Aw Swijt”

This classic is a Maltese favourite, generally sent out before the first ‘hello’ is ever uttered. The swijt can be practically replaced with anything else: pupa/lily/qalbi

It may not be considered as harassment to many, but it does feel a bit off getting an ‘aw swijt’ the first time you ever talk to someone. And we’re willing to bet that 90% of the time, the guy saying it is only really looking at your photo anyway, and isn’t really interested in much more.

2. Slut shaming

A common forever-hobby among many people, and not just locally. The slut shaming train has been steadily going off tracks over the last couple of years.

Surges of women are called sluts for either not choosing one guy over the other or not being arsed about making commitments. Classy.

3. Being such a pest is a form of mild harassment

Trid niltaqgħu llum?

Uwejja niltaqgħu.

Imma m’hemmx għalfejn illum ta’.

Għada tajjeb?

Chances are that if a girl said no the first time, she will also say no on all the other occasions.

So maybe stop being such a pest.

4. Dick pics

Some people think that taking photos of their junk in unflattering positions and lighting is a surefire way of getting girls.

Guess what: we – and thousands of women out there – disagree.

5. Anything remotely sexual

No. Do not try to sext people you just met last week.

Apart from being disgusting, it’s also painfully hilarious for everyone else who will read it.

6. Lame pick-up lines

Clearly this guy is so socially inept and unoriginal that he feels like his only way to pick up a girl is by looking for actual pick-up lines online.

And lame ones at that. And of course, overtly sexual. Eeesh.

7. “Uwejja, it was only a joke”

After saying something offensive or obviously crossing the line and making you feel uncomfortable, he will quickly devalue your WTF-ness by saying “Uwejja biex niċċajta.

Sure.
