7 Stereotypes Maltese People Actually Believe About Foreigners

Every country has its fair share of stereotypes when it comes to other nationalities. Everyone seems to have a set of misconceptions about other countries and more often than not, they are wrong.

Maltese people are not strangers to generalisations; we can’t seem to help ourselves. Here are seven stereotypes that a lot of Maltese people legit believe about foreigners.

1. The Italians

You often hear people say that Italians are annoying and full of themselves

“Kollha qżież madonna... Imma the men, they’re too hot jaħasra…

Of course, the irony of Maltese people commenting on Italians as if they were some weird people from the other side of the country.

It’s strange what a slightly different language, set of mannerisms and a couple of hundred kilometres can do to two “completely different” countries.

2. The Spanish

The Spaniards don’t get much hate from Maltese people, on the contrary — we seem to think that they’re all mazzez.

“eee mela xejn m’huma mazzez l-Ispanjoli. Mela, hekk għidilha il Josephine, dik kienet toħroġ ma dak Gesouardo vera mazza”

4. The British

Some of us have a fond love for the Brits, and that’s only amplified by the sheer number of expats we’ve got running around.

However, the country is divided between loving them because of football, or hating them because of football.

“Kisħin l’Ingliżi istja ta’”

or

“Ħelwin ta’ jaħasra, vera orrajt”

5. The Swedes

The stereotype here in Malta is that Swedish women are irresistibly sexy. Oh, and they’re all blonde of course.

“Eeeee għabba naqa ta’ Żvediża, klassi”

6. The French

The French seem to get the wrong end of the stick all over the world, and in Malta it’s no different.

“They’re very uptight istra ta’, you talk to them in english u jirrisponduk bil’Franċiż.”

7. The Americans

We seriously seem to think that these people are made of money and are pretentious.

They’re not all like Trump you know.

“Eeee dak Amerikan minjaf kemm għandu flus.. u minjaf x’inhu bassa.”

BONUS: The Russians

There’s a divided opinion when it comes to Russians in Malta, but the most popular one is that the women are extremely beautiful, whereas the men… not so much.

Aw, dawk ir-Russi God Bless ee. Imma l-irġiel qishom granċijiet jaħasra”

Tag someone who believes these stereotypes!
