7 Things You Can Do To Beat The Cruel Maltese Summer Heat

Article Featured Image

Owning an air conditioner is not always enough. You cannot spend every single hour of summer lying on the floor feeling the glorious artificial coolness of either your fan or your AC at home (trust us; we’ve tried, and it’s not worth the time, energy, and electricity bills).

So here’s a list of things you can do to feel a little bit less hot this summer if you’re going to be spending the season on the Maltese Islands.

1. Avoid heavy foods

Try to avoid pastries, heavy meats, fried stuff, soups and all that. Instead, try to opt for all of the lovely fruits and vegetables Mother Nature made for us. Not only will fruits like watermelon, honeydew, cucumbers and berries keep you healthy and hydrated, but they will also give you all the vitamins and antioxidants you will need to feel energised throughout the day.

If you really cannot resist soups, try having gazpacho or smoothies. They’re pretty much fruit soup.

2. Rent a kayak

Enjoy the Maltese blue seas on one of those weird sausage-y kayaks this summer. It’s a cool experience to have, and they’re really fun to ride. You can explore caves and beaches all you want, maybe you can even swim in unexplored places. Remember to pack a good sunblock and loads of water just in case you accidentally pull a Castaway.

3. Go to Mdina

The Silent City is a true gift from the heavens in summer. The high walls keep most of the sun out and the grid-like streets seem to be constantly heavily ventilated by a fresh breeze. Mdina is one of the only places in Malta where you can afford to wear a light cardigan in summer. It’s either the genial way it was built or the gargantuan amount of ghosts hunting the place… we really don’t know.

4. Hose down in the bitħa

When we were kids, our nanna used to hose us down in the back garden with cold water. Not sure if this was a nation-wide tradition to keep your kids from getting bored and too hot during their summer holidays, but it was pretty fun to run around and splash every single thing in sight.

Maybe it wouldn’t be such a terrible idea if you hosed down your family on hot days every once in a while too.

5. Stock up on the ice creams

As we’ve already said, try to stick to light meals. We all crave those delicious creamy treats though, so stocking up on some ice cream really isn’t a bad idea.

Those tiny creambabies can keep your temperature under control during the harshest of heatwaves, so it’s best for you to stock up on these yummy treats before it’s too late.

6. Try diving

It might look like a bit of a bother to do, but what’s the best way to fight the heat if not by actually immersing yourself in the sea?

It’s pretty nice to watch all of those fish swim around and chill in their natural habitat with no worry in the world, so this one easily hits two birds (or is it fish?) with one stone.

7. Go for a night swim

Trust us.

If you go for a nightly swim on a sandy beach, you really aren’t risking getting eaten by sharks or kidnapped by mermaids. You can at least have a beer as you cool your lower body in the sea — just please throw your cans in the bins, mhux fil-baħar.
