8 Things Every Maltese Law Fresher Will Definitely Say This Year

University’s new semester is literally right around the corner, and with it will come a fresh slew of confusion, misunderstandings and struggles. And if you’re in Law, you’ll know the hassle all too well.

Here are eight things that every Maltese Law Fresher will end up thinking or saying this year, to help remind you that you definitely won’t be alone in this.

1. “Aw, you know where ALT is aa?”

We’ve all been there.

It’s Day One of University. We’re all pumped up and ready to go. You take your first few steps onto campus, meeting freshers and experienced students alike.

Everyone’s piling up for Fresher’s Week stands and some freebies… and you’re lost. You really should have taken GħSL’s campus tour. It’s specifically planned for fresher Law Students and will guarantee you won’t get lost. Especially when it comes to the elusive ALT room where you will need to go soon enough.

2. “So like… we have to choose Electives?”

One of the first decisions you have to take as a fresher concerns what elective you intend to take for this scholastic year, and with Law having a substantial number of compulsory topics with large amounts of ECTS credits, navigating your way through Electives might seem confusing.

While you have a month to change if you do so require, it’s always best to choose right the first time. GħSL has your back with the ‘Choosing Your Law Elective’ event on the 4th of October. GħSL’s Facebook page also has a couple of Electives Fact Sheets specifically for first years.

3. “Degree Plus seems fun… but should I really go for something?”

First Aid and Music Theory do sound fun, but there are also other options in order for you to attain your Degree Plus points.

GħSL’s collaboration with The Degree Plus Office means that if you attend events like an international trip, the Original Law Live-In (by GhSL), or a number of academic events, you’re automatically listed for GħSL+ Points by Degree Plus.

4. “Is he speaking Latin or am I that hungover?”

Nope, that really is Latin you’re hearing.

It’s your first lecture at Uni, and Dr. Mifsud Bonnici’s Roman Law lectures are already proving to be a lesson in foreign languages. You think to yourself, how do professionals remember all this? How do they apply it in real life? Are Latin terms actually important?

Why not ask them yourself? From Freshers To Lawyers is an event in collaboration with JCA (The Junior Chamber of Advocates) which deals with the shift from being a first year Law Student to being an actual lawyer. As they say in Latin, ‘Ask and Ye shall be answered.’

Well, not really, but you get our point.

5. “When do I get to start parading into court like Harvey from Suits?”

It will be a couple of months (or years) before you start entering court, but GhSL and JCA’s joint collaboration for the Court and Parliament Visits will get you up to scratch on all the important venues whilst making you feel somewhat like a Lawyer.

Suit up and sign up today!

6. “Come to think of it, I do have some free time. Tgħid insiefer?”

You’ll eventually come to the realisation that you can cheekily fit in a flight (or two) to Greece, Amsterdam and Washington. And the best news is, you can actually do this with your Law mates!

Last year’s GħSL trips proved to be a massive success, and they’re always trying to spice things up come the new semester.

Bonus: You get GhSL + Points for this as well. Talk about win-win.

7. “Exams already? Għadna kemm bdejna!”

Keep calm and try not to kill anyone; the worst is yet to come.

GħSL has you covered for January’s exams as well. The website has a past-papers section and a note sharing area which will make sure you have enough materials to be able to study effectively for January’s exams. It’s never too soon to start.

Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favour!

8. “But we do have the best parties around, right?”

You’re not wrong there.

Lanċa Legali, Il-Ballu, and all the other open bars should be a good enough incentive to work hard and enjoy yourself at these events.

After all, it’s the parties we remember the most… take our advice on that one.
