9 Different Types Of All-Nighters All Maltese Students Have During Their Final Year

April is a busy time for students in their final year at the University of Malta. It marks the start of a few consecutive months of crying, eating, sleeping at inappropriate hours, procrastinating, more crying, swearing and trying to graduate. Time to get that thesis done and those finals exams covered.

And throughout those months, you will inevitably find yourself partaking in an ancient ritual known as an ‘all-nighter’, wherein you and your friends will lock yourselves in a room to make sure you (try) and get all the work you need to get done, done. Here are some examples of those infamous all-nighters.

1. The classic KSU Common Room all-nighter

You’re there, your friends are there, the people you don’t really like are there; it’s very loud and smelly. You get some work done, but not enough.

But you’re there every week and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

2. A really shit KSU Common Room all-nighter

You’re there, your friends are there, the people you don’t really like are there; it’s very loud and smelly. You get some work done, but not enough.

It’s the first time you went to the common room, and you’ll probably never go back.

3. An all-nighter that turns into a therapy session

The setting: your best friend’s dinner room.

The cast: you and the only five people from university you can stand.

The plot: at least one of you is crying and another person has had too much caffeine. You take a two-hour break from working to bitch and moan and cry together.

4. A trip to the drive-thru

Sometimes you just need to take a break from the books and drive to G?arg?ur for a McFlurry and some chips, you know?

5. The all-nighter at the airport

You need a change of setting; the common room gives you anxiety, but if you spend another second in your house, you’ll probably explode.

So off you go to the airport to drink over-priced cappucinos and use their free WiFi.

6. An attempt at doing an all-nighter on your own

Sometimes you just need to work on your own.

So you set up for a night of work; snacks, books, a study playlist on Spotify, coloured pens and you’re just a couple of steps away from the kettle.

You open your book. You fall asleep at your desk. You didn’t actually get any work done.

7. The official ‘Synoptics Night’

Right. This is it.

You and your class mates are about to tackle your entire course load from start to finish. Its all very A Beautiful Mind. Except none of you are geniuses and you’re all very stressed.

8. An all-nighter that includes getting actual work done

They are few and far between, but on this faithful night, despite being surrounded by all the usual distractions, you muster up the strength to do some actual work. Either that, or you have a deadline in two hours and are nowhere near done so you have no choice.

9. Giving up and getting turnt

Let’s face it; it’s a Friday night.

You may have a lot of work to do but none of you are feeling it. So you pack up and hit the bar instead of the books. You’ll try again next week.
