Nine Maltese-Themed Costumes You Can DIY For The Upcoming Carnival Festivities

Carnival in Malta is right around the corner, and whether you’re a dress-to-impress kind of person, or perhaps a bit more laid-back type, we’ve got you covered.

2023 provided some pretty iconic moments for the Maltese scene – moments you could memorialise this upcoming Carnival.

Whether you like to splurge on your carnival costume, or you want to opt for a more budget-friendly option, here are some locally-sourced ideas you can take some inspiration from.

1. Michelle Muscat And Her “Shiny” Necklace

Remember when Michelle Muscat reviewed a necklace which holds the Guinness World Records for the Most Emeralds Set on a Necklace and the Most Diamonds set on a Necklace?

How could the collective island forget that she called it “weighty” and “very light” in the same breath.

Back in Halloween, influencer Raphael Pace even DIY-ed this “special” moment, using a bejewelled toilet seat, a polka-dotted dress, a blonde wig, and red lipstick.

2. A Group Of Chopped Trees

Here’s a costume idea for a group, because why be just a single chopped tree when there are so many in Malta?

Bonus idea: You could add some activists and police (dragging them away) to the mix.

3. Metsola And Spider Man

Whether you want to fly solo and wear a spider man costume and a Metsola mask, or opt for the Metsola and Spider Man duo option, the possibilities are endless with this one.

4. Dicola

While you could opt for any of the other love island couples (that once were), or the painfully cute Sven and Gaby, we wanted to pay tribute to the couple that kept us all entertained with its highs and lows, love triangles, and pretend breakups – Dale and Nicola (aka Dicola).

5. Any One Of Malta’s Podcasters

Everyone and their mother is a podcaster now.

From Malta’s OG podcasters like Trudy Kerr and Jon Mallia, to any of the newbies – the possibilities are, quite literally, endless.

6. Tiger Queen Maria

Malta’s TikTok sensation needs no introduction.

All you need is a blonde wig, a smokey eye, a pouty lip, and a sassy attitude – and voila, you’re Tiger Queen Maria.

Note: Make sure to practice your one-liners: “The tiger she don’t care”, “she don’t care what do the t[a]rtle” and “the tiger she stays relax”.

7. Malta Film Commission Girl

This mysterious blonde woman has been the face of the Malta Film Commission’s Facebook page since July 2023, so she deserves a mention.

This costume is relatively easy to DIY – a blonde wig, white crop top, jeans and a seductive pose.

Bonus idea: Get your partner or friend to throw on a bald cap and suit, and hey presto – you guys can be the mysterious blonde girl and Malta’s Film Commissioner Johann Grech.

8. Xummiemu’s Comeback

Everyone’s childhood favourite environmental mascot made an expensive comeback this year, in a €5.2m campaign to clear up Malta’s streets.

If you are one who likes to wrap-up during the carnival festivities and loves a good throwback moment-all you have to do is grab a hedgehog onesie and call yourself Xummiemu.

9. Malta’s Star-Studded 2023 Performers Robbie Williams And Xtina

Now that these two pop icons have graced our little island with their presence and voices, we have adopted them as our own.

Robbie and Xtina are practically Maltese now, so they merit an honorary mention.

Take inspiration from these two singers’ countless fashion statements and get ready to rock the night away.
