9 Other Maltese Shorthands For The Millennial In All Of Us

The Maltese language has still some ways to go if it wants to catch up with English’s online efficiency. However, there are already some shorthands you can should start using. Well, it’s time for more.

In response to our original article, our readers have suggested some other additions to the list, and naturally, some of them are NSFW. Here are nine others to add to your texting rotation.

1. j (ġej)

One letter to show people you’re coming is exactly what you need, even when the Maltese word is only three letters long. Remember; if you need to send this, you’re probably running late anyway.

2. tċ (tini ċans)

If whoever’s waiting starts bugging your ass, treat them to an extra letter.

3. t8 (tgħid)

Most of the Maltese words ending with the same sound can be abbreviated with a simple ‘8’. For bonus entertainment purposes, see how many you can fit in one sentence.

“T8 ħass8 li bass8 jew?”

4. dl (dak l-aqwa)

Another popular one, this one can be used as either a thoughtful addition or an elegant stroke of sarcasm.

5. XŻT? (x’ iż-żobb trid ?)

A very popular (not-so-passive) aggressive Maltese way of asking someone what they want, this can also be followed up by the calmer KNN (‘ kif nista naqdik?’)

6. NUN (nirrombla u nidħaq)

A much more faithful translation of the globally-recognised ‘LOL’, this one’s for those moments where you want to tell people you’re laughing out loud, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re at a point of #ĦTBD (ħrajt taħti bid-daħq).

7. BŻT (biż-żobb ta’)

This is pretty much a prefix for all things disliked by now.

Don’t like Panettone? ‘ BŻT Panettone’

Don’t like the heat? ‘ BŻT sħana’

Don’t like  Wudy sausage rolls You’re wrong.

8. MĦ (mur ħudu)

Our very own ‘Fuck off’, this one can be decorated and lengthened as one pleases. Heck, it might very well end up in half an alphabet’s worth of letters by the end of it.

9. ŻFKGĦ (żobb f’għoxx kemm għandek)

Eh, of course someone was going to suggest this one.

One of the most popular ways of offending someone, this phrase is quite the mouthful… so of course someone  had  to come up with an abbreviation for it.

Tag someone to make them go ‘XŻT?’!
