9 Smells That Define Malta’s Summer
There are as many reasons to love summer as there are days of sunshine, but sometimes tiny scents trigger a whole host of emotions. As that ‘summer feeling’ gets more and more intense, here are a few of the reasons we’re already getting so excited.
1. A just-opened bag of charcoal
While not everyone loves the petrol-esque smell (or at least pretends to so as not to look strange) it’s the first whiff of good things to come. Tasty food and fun times with friends? Yes please.
2. A blazing BBQ topped with sausages
As the little pink buggers sizzle on the grill, you sit back cracking open a cold beer and enjoy the wafting smell of perfection.
3. An open bottle of sunblock
Nothing says ‘day at the beach’ like a freshly applied layer of sunblock. Even just opening the cap is enough to get you in the mood for a swim.
4. The sea in all its different stages
From the beautiful morning sea breeze, to the gentle smell of sea-salt and sand in the evening, an islanders heart will always belong to the sea.
5. A beach ħobża
Packed into a lunchbox or bought fresh from the kiosk, the combined smell of ħobż biż-żejt and mint is too much summer for most to handle.
6. A freshly cracked-open watermelon
Let’s take the time to reiterate: it’s not a dessert. But as an additional treat at any beach day who doesn’t love a good slice of watermelon?
7. The greasy goodness from fast-food kiosks
Burgers, hot-dogs, fries and onions. These are the gifts of every drunken night after a festa or some party at Gianpula.
8. The sugary sweetness of festa donuts
Watching them plop into the sizzling oil and spin around in their sugary coating is incredible, but nowhere near as great as the smell they release when bought by the dozen.

The hardest smell to describe, they’re like a birthday sprinkler on steroids and they smell exactly like home.
