9 Ways To Make Spring Cleaning Your Maltese Home Way Easier

Article Featured Image

Spring is the perfect opportunity to make a start on getting round to those odd jobs around the house that you’ve been meaning to tackle all winter. Now that Christmas and Easter have come and gone, the countdown to summer has begun, and what could be more satisfying than welcoming in the new season with a fresh and organised home?

Here are a few useful tips and tricks for reclaiming a little order around the house for all you soon to be domestic gods and goddesses out there. Happy spring cleaning!

1. Make the most of the services available

If you’ve decided it’s time to redecorate the spare room that’s turned into a makeshift office-come-fire-hazard-junk-shop over the past decade, then you’re going to want to get rid of that spare rusty ironing board and dusty stand-fan circa ’87.

Bulky refuse collection can be sorted out very easily through your local council. All it takes is a phone call to set up a collection time for any larger household items or pieces of furniture that might be dragging you down.

2. Keep charity in mind

If you do have items that are still in good shape, such as safe electrical items, kitchen utensils and baby related bits and bobs that you no longer need, there’s a good chance that less fortunate people might need them instead.

You can donate unwanted household goods to places like homeless shelters and women’s refuges, so that people under their care or those preparing to set off on a new chapter in their life can benefit from them. Just check with the organisation beforehand before you roll up there.

3. Donate to a cause of your choice

There are several charity shops all over the island that raise money by selling off stuff that’s been brought in by the public. A quick internet search will give you an idea of where to drop your loot off, whether it be in aid of a humanitarian cause or neutering stray cats.

You can bring in all sorts of items, from books to crockery, just make sure nothing’s damaged and clothes are not torn or stained. One man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure, and you can give yourself a pat on the back afterwards for helping towards a great cause.

Well Done

4. Waste not want not

If you’re feeling particularly brave, you might want to make a stab at clearing out your overstuffed freezer. With any luck you’ve labelled your leftovers…

If you’ve got small quantities of all sorts of frozen vegetables stuffed in there, why not chuck everything in a big pot of boiling water with some chopped onions, garlic and stock and hope for the best before liquidising. Soup keeps well in the fridge for up to three days, and it’s always nice to have a healthy entrée to your evening meal for the whole family.

5. Consider a car boot sale

A Sunday car boot sale can be the perfect excuse to rid yourself of all that excess tat that’s been making your wardrobe a nightmare to function with. Mornings would be a breeze if your clothes rails were filled with clothes that actually fit, and clothes that you actually, you know, liked. With this in mind, why not plan something out of the ordinary for the weekend, and fill up some black bags with stuff you’ll be happy to see the back of.

Prepare yourself for an early start and saying goodbye to your once-loved possessions for mere cents, bearing in mind it’s for the greater good. With any luck you’ll be able to afford a set of all-matching clothes hangers with your takings – result!

Clueless

6. Facebook is your friend

If a car boot sale seems like a tad too much hassle, there are a number of amazing Maltese groups on Facebook that can be highly beneficial on your Feng Shui quest. All you’ll need are some photos of the items you’d like to get rid of, and with a few clicks you’ll be well on your way to a decluttered home.

Whether it’s a job lot of kids toys or your old table and chairs which you actually can’t stand the sight of anymore, there’s a good chance there’ll be someone on the end of the screen who can make use of what’s essentially draining you of space and energy. It’s a win win situation.

7. Get creative

When you’re sifting through years’ worth of accumulated crap, you might come across some stuff you can’t believe you’ve forgotten about. It might be vintage fabric scraps from an old sewing project you’d grown bored of, or heartwarming memoirs or family photos that should really be displayed. Shop around for multiple aperture picture frames and spend an evening getting stuck in cutting and sticking.

If you’re one of those “glass half full” people that’s been collecting empty jam jars for – well, you tell me – then put them to good use once and for all. Pick up some stained glass paint from an art shop for a crafty weekend activity that the kids will absolutely love.

Rugrats

8. Be ruthless

Make space in your home for things that either give you pleasure every time you look at them or things that are simply useful. There is absolutely no reason why you should have a selection of lunch boxes for triple the amount of people who currently reside in your home. Either start using them for storing aforementioned soup in neat, stackable freezer containers or chuck them away – for recycling of course.

Ditto all those thinning, faded towels clogging up your boiler cupboard. Save two for “emergencies” involving hair dye or muddy pets, the rest can go in the bin. Where they belong.

9. Treat yourself

Set yourself achievable goals that you’ll be satisfied with, and make sure you reward yourself for it! This will keep you motivated when you’re sifting through your old school copy books under the bed which you’ve kept just in case you needed an impromptu refresher course in O-Level algebra, which – whatever life path you’ve chosen – is highly unlikely.

Once you’ve created the zen minimalist safe haven you’ve always dreamed of, you ought to invest in some lovely new bedding, or at least some pretty scatter cushions or fluffy hand towels to welcome you into your new serene lifestyle. Bliss!
