A Ranking Of The Maltese Church Songs We Used To Love Singing

Whether you’re a regular mass-goer or haven’t stepped into a church for a while, a lot of the songs we used to sing will remain stuck in your head for the rest of your life. Here’s a ranking of our favourites from the pews.

9. Tiġi saltnatek

Apart from the initial thrill that came with singing a song instead of simply saying the ‘Our Father’, Tiġi Saltnatek also provided all young mass-goers with the chance to sing lyrics that made zero sense to them at the top of their lungs. ‘Hekkda fl-art’ anyone?

8. Missier il-ħolqien kollu

A classic church ballad, with all the right amounts of passion in all the right places.

7. Nersaq lejk Mulej

A repetitive chorus that pops in randomly throughout the song, the ‘Mulej’ lyric in this song was an undeniable thrill to sing.

6. Ejja wara Ġesu

Perhaps the most repetitive song in everyone’s repertoire, the communal drawl on ‘ejjaaaaa wara Ġesu’ after every questioning line was what everyone came for.

5. Fis-skiet u l-ġabra

What’s not to love about a Maltese cover version of ‘The Sound of Silence’? The dramatic pause between ‘fis-skiet u…’ and ‘l-ġabra’

4. Xmara

All the charm of ‘Ejja Wara Ġesu’ with some added depth to the lyrics. Plus there’s a lot of different notes for you to attempt to hit, with a nice scaling buildup to ensure stunaġni is as painful as possible.

3. Fil-ħlewwa ta’ Mejju

This song will always remain a staunch favourite. Some might argue that this is because we only get to sing it once a year, but whatever the reason, this song remains “l-għaxqa tas-sema”.

2. Iddeċidejt

We have five words for you: “Agħamel bija dak li trid”. No song comes close to the passion with which we all sang ‘iddeċidejt’. Whispering soft moments, passionate belts, this hymn really does have it all.

1. Fis-Santwarju tal-Madonna

While ‘Iddeċidejt’ evokes strong, passionate emotions, ‘Fis-Santwarju tal-Madonna’ let every single child feel the freedom and fight the giggles that came with shouting: “QALULI MADONNA LI SSEBBAĦ IL-ĠONNA”.

Think back to when you were young and remember the force you put behind every Madonna. Remember all the times you weren’t even sure you were allowed to sing it. Combine those emotions and you’ll quickly remember why this song had to take the number one spot.
