Ambitious New Live Music Venue In Ta’ Xbiex Turns To Crowdfunding To Bring Foreign Artists To The Island

Live music venues in Malta are too few and far between. A new project which is set to hit the island this summer, however, is hoping to continue tipping the scales in favour of live music lovers. It’s all happening in the heart of Malta’s busiest region, and the people behind the ambitious idea are looking for help from their future clientele.

Storeroom is a new music venue set to open its doors this June along the Ta’ Xbiex Seafront. And when we say along the seafront, we literally mean it; the venue’s doors are just a couple of metres away from the sea and that iconic pair of pastel benches overlooking Valletta.

The venue is matching the unique location with its unique space. What was previously quite literally a small storeroom among the front’s boatyard-garages, the place is currently undergoing a refurbishment like no other. And for those who can’t wait for the eventual unveiling of Malta’s newest live music venue, a dedicated Instagram page has been updating everyone on the gruelling but exciting process of birthing a bar from a garage.

What Storeroom is set to look like in June

“The venue was specifically chosen because of the location and the fantastic view,” manager Carlo Muscat told Lovin Malta. A jazz musician veteran himself, Carlo knows a thing or two when it comes to venue standards, and he aims on enforcing them all on Storeroom. “Our aim is to host a series of performance showcasing some of the top local artists,” he said.

“We want to focus on offering a mix of concerts throughout the week,” Carlo told Lovin Malta. “We believe in providing audiences with the chance to discover live music in a unique space, whilst giving professional musicians the opportunity to share their work within a dedicated setting.” And yes, plans are already in motion to incorporate international acts into Storeroom’s roster.

Planning the release of a new music venue is already a daunting task in of itself, but Carlo and fellow Storeroom manager Matthew Cachia Zammit want to make sure the hype is real when it comes to Malta’s newest bar. As we speak, the as of yet unfinished venue already has plans for weekly events and confirmed concerts. The acts are already planned, and concepts such as ‘Tuesday’s Smoke Out Sessions’(a weekly night dedicated to young and upcoming local talent) are already in place.

To make sure that Storeroom’s momentum only increases by the time it opens its doors this summer, a Zaar crowdfunding campaign has been launched to include people into the venue’s ‘core clientele’.

Effectively acting as a membership period to those who absolutely can’t wait for the venue’s official opening, the campaign is aimed at raising the last 4% of funds needed to kickstart this awesome project.

“With your support, we will be in a position to host even more concerts throughout the year, giving you, the members, more opportunities to benefit from your membership,” Carlo said. Costs covered by the donations – which range from €5 all the way up to €20,000 – include artist fees and any travel costs (such as flights, transfers and accommodation).

Of course, different levels of donations come with different perks, from a free round of drinks on the opening night to a corporate package which includes your company logo on all concert promo material. The membership package, which will set you back €40, gets you perks like privilege pre-booking for concerts and 10% of all bar purchases.

With less than 30 days left on the campaign’s clock, Storeroom seems to be set to reach its goal of €5,000 (at the time of writing, €3,145 had been raised). The final push, however, is as vital as ever.

The new venue’s very first event has already been uploaded onto Facebook and is slowly gaining traction. Of course, there’s still a ways to wait, with the event kicking the venue off on the 23rd of June.

The day-long event will see Grammy-award-winning Josiah Woodson visiting Storeroom for a masterclass in the morning. Then, to truly end the night in style, the musician’s very own Josiah Woodson Project, a Parisian quartet with a classic American twist, will be performing there on the night.

Even though it’s not set to open its doors until June, Storeroom has already gone live with a website for the venue, and the sense of community can already be seen.

In a Places We Love section, a long list of bars and venues from around the island are mentioned and even linked. “Here is a list of places around the island which we absolutely adore that stick  to a genuinely solid approach to their concept,” the website reads. “Be sure to visit as many as of them as you can and see for yourself.”

Look out for more information on Storeroom’s official opening on the upcoming venue’s Facebook page. Until June, we’ll be waiting with bated breath.
