A New Pavi/Pama Complex Could Be Opening In Marsa
Malta’s next sprawling shopping complex could be opening in Marsa after PG Group, the company behind PAVI and PAMA which recently purchased a disused macaroni factory in Marsa, announced they were ready to open a third supermarket “if the opportunity were to present itself”.
In an interview with The Malta Business Observer, Charles Borg, CEO of PG Group said that the company was set to open what would be their third large shopping complex in Malta be their third large shopping complex in Malta if the investment was “sustainable and responsible”, in line with their “thriving” supermarket business.
PG Group purchased the United Macaroni Factory on Qormi Road, Marsa, on the 5th of February, 2018. Purchased for €3.5 million, the factory features around 3,200 square metres of space; in comparison, the PAMA shopping village in Mosta extends over 6,340 square metres.
When it was announced back in February, the company stated that the site would be developed into commercial premises, but that it would most likely be used as office spaces to be rented out.
However, Mr Borg’s recent interview means that the PG Group board may be reconsidering the Marsa site’s purpose
Mr Borg explained that the macaroni factory purchase was a “sensible property investment”, and that the company was happy to hold on to the factory until the “right moment presented itself”.
They made it clear that they would only open the third supermarket if the investment matched the level of their previous shopping establishments, and would provide an adequate return to shareholders.
Seeing how close the location is situated to Qormi’s PAVI, there is speculation within the Maltese commerce industry on whether the site could be used to open a large SPAR supermarket.
