Stability Not Uncertainty: Several NGO’s To Hold Protest Demanding Change in Policies & Kusi Dismark’s Immediate Release
Following Kusi Dismark’s detainment on 21st January at his barber shop, he has since been in detention facing the eventuality of deportation.
Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri has insisted Dismark’s impending deportation to Ghana is fair and inevitable.
Camilleri’s stance remains that “no one should be given an advantage over others and everyone should be treated equally” even though Dismark has worked hard to save money to be able to study at MCAST and open his hairdressing salon in Ħamrun’s High Street.
Kusi has given back to the Maltese community, paid taxes, and worked just as hard as any other recognised Maltese citizen.
Thus, his being detained and threatened to be deported places Kusi as one of the many victims of this government policy.
“I’m scared…terrified. I have to start life again at 37,” Dismark said.
After 13 years living in Malta, Dismark has built a life, a family, and even friendships whom all describe him as a “hardworking, trustworthy, reliable and respectful man”.
“My hope was Malta. I invested my hope, energy, and ambition in a country that called me home.” he continued.
The migrant community and Movimenti Graffitti, alongside several local organisations, will be protesting for Kusi’s immediate release from detention.
Apart from that, Moviment Graffitti said that the march will be demanding “to put an end to government raids that detain and threaten to deport long-standing, law-abiding members of the migrant community.”
As well as, urging “the re-introduction of a residence permit scheme, similar to the Specific Residence Authorisation which grants people that have long contributed to the Maltese economy and community some stability and peace in their lives.”
The protest will be held this Sunday, 25th February at 3 pm at Ħamrun Square. The exact meeting point will be at Ħamrun Kiosk, where the march will begin and progress towards Valletta. Speeches will be given in front of Parliament.
