A Pembroke street has been named after Joseph Zammit, the firefighter who sadly lost his life last September after helping put out a grass fire in Pembroke.

The street is located alongside a major construction project in front of St George’s Bay and was previously unnamed.

“We wanted to honour Joseph Zammit. He lost his life while extinguishing a fire in our locality – so we proposed that the street is named after him,” Pembroke mayor Dean Hili said while speaking to Times of Malta.

The mayor said how the local council had previously suggested an alternative name for the street back in August however this all changed when Zammit passed away.

The local council reached out to the Civil Protection Department to get in contact with Zammit’s family and get their consent on this proposal.

Triq Joseph Zammit became official last Friday and the Pembroke local council have also ordered a plaque with the street’s new name.
