Watch: President George Vella Attends Award Show At The Public Services Expo Closing Ceremony

The Public Service Expo has come to a close with an award ceremony recognising the work of this year’s outstanding public officers – with Maltese President George Vella in attendance.
“Citizens expect and deserve motivated and ambitious public services which invest in the future,” said President George Vella in a speech given during the awards.
This statement resonated with the Head of Public Service Tony Sultana’s comments about the “new face of public service” during the expo – showcasing modern technologies such as AI and automation, as tools which could assist officers and render services more effective, efficient and helpful.
Best Green Initiative was awarded to Ramon Tabone, a Mater Dei Hospital engineer who worked on a project reducing heat waste from the hospital’s chillers – by rerouting “lost” energy for heating wards and water.
His work – and that of his team – is estimated to have saved around one million litres of fuel, reducing carbon emissions by more than three million kilograms.
“In today’s fast-paced life, these services can no longer be considered a luxury, but have become something closer to a need,” continued the President.
The Inspiring Social Responsibility Award was given to the Malta Food Agency, for their distribution of fresh fruit, vegetables and fish to soup kitchens and food banks.
The Marsa Community Policing team was given the Inclusion Award for establishing activities seeking to bridge a rift between minority groups and authorities.
An Outstanding Effort Award was given to the Civil Protection team in recognition of the assistance given to earthquake victims in Turkey, when they travelled overseas during the humanitarian crisis.
This year’s Project of the Year award went to the Department of Active Aging and Community Care for the ‘Dar Padova’ clinic – which offers holistic services for the elderly in Gozo, whilst also providing locals in need with a night shelter facility.
Commenting on these and other awards given out during the ceremony, President George Vella concluded:
“I witnessed proof of public services employing solutions being put to work at high capacity in a variety of advanced situations.”
“This is the new face of Public Services, which is going to continue to offer more specialised careers requiring more varied skillsets.”
