Ripping out your hair as you try to find a parking space on campus may soon become a thing of the past as Malta Public Transport launches a new shuttle service to the University of Malta from the Pembroke Park & Ride.

With restricted available parking space in the area, the new route TD 17: Pembroke – University will begin next week on October 1st as lectures kick off.

“This is an alternative and feasible solution for students, and we are glad to announce this innovative service,” said Daniel Grech, Malta Public Transport Commercial Director. “The new route will have a positive impact on the general traffic flow and parking situation in the areas surrounding University.”

Mr Grech understands that tackling one of the biggest headaches for sutdents is also a great contribution to bettering our environment. “Malta Public Transport considered the accumulated hours that students waste driving around looking for parking, and the negative consequences that this has on air quality in the area.”

KSU, the University’s Student Council, has worked with Malta Public Transport on several other projects, and said it “welcomes this new service as a viable alternative to private vehicle usage” while “looking forward to collaborating on the expansion of this service in the long term.” It will also be pushing further initiatives for carpooling and bicycle use throughout the year.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Route TD 17 will operate from Monday to Friday, from Pembroke P&R directly to Qroqq, close to the Msida Skate Park.
  • The service will run every 15 minutes between 07:00 and 18:00 – with frequency changing to 30 minutes between 10:30 and 12:30.
  • As with other Tallinja Direct routes, tariffs are €1.50 for Tallinja card users and €3.00 for cash tickets.
  • The trip consumes 2 credits on a 12 Single Day Journeys card, equivalent to €2.50.
  • A three-month testing period from date of launch will analyse take-up and trends in usage.
  • The trial period will run until the end of 2018.
