5 Contemporary Art Shows In Malta You Need To Visit ASAP

Have you made your near-future outing plans yet – and is there anything art-related included?

Here is a non-definitive list of exhibitions and events to catch ASAP, because life is always more delicious and beautiful with art.

1. When The Moon Waxes Red /  Spazju Kreattiv

In this sprawling exhibition called When the Moon Waxes Red brings together international artists and collectives to address the imbalance between human activities to extract resources and colonial ideologies, justifying the protection of property over people and nature’s degradation, by using ecofeminism as a point of departure.

2. Ex Vuoto / The Rootz Bar

Ex-Vuoto is an exhibition by a multidisciplinary artist is-Sinjurina. The work is inspired by her time in Florence during lockdown in 2021, where she came across neglected and abandoned bags of lace; and reimagined and recontextualised the craft of anonymous artisans into contemporary textile arts.

The exhibition will be held at Rootz, meaning you get to have fantastic food and cocktails while looking at contemporary art.

3. Oikos Logia / R Gallery

R Gallery presents Oikos Logia, a group exhibition that contemplates the dysfunctional relationship between humans and their natural habitat.

Curated by Julien Vinet, this exhibition comprises a rich survey of contemporary work by Adrian Abela, Jon Banthorpe, Anna Calleja, Showzen Kajima, Tom Van Malderen, Cyril Sancereau, Ian Schranz, Stefan Spiteri, Ritty Tascum and Sam Vassallo.

4. Heart Of Matter / Kamra Ta’ Fuq

Artist Victor Agius is presenting a series of earth paintings and stoneware ceramics at the Southern art gem Kamra Ta’ Fuq. Curated by Melanie Erixon, Agius’ work focuses on how man uses material around him in ritual to satisfy his spiritual needs, using terra rosa, ceramics, pigments, cement and clay.

5. Rituals of Passage / Valletta Contemporary

Rituals of Passage is a site-specific exhibition, a co-creative project between Ryan Falzon, Aaron Bezzina, Alexandra Fraser, Yasmine Akondo, Mladen Hadžić, and Stefan Kolgen.

As the title suggests, the show contemplates rituals and motions that form part of everyday life and soothe us, especially in post-pandemic times.
