Malta’s national dance company, Żfin Malta, will be premiering its latest production entitled On Reefs and Eroded Lands We Danced which is all about the human reaction to environmental degradation and the somewhat dystopian future that’s yet to come.

“It’s a futuristic piece about what will happen to our environment in thousands of years,” member of the dance company, Pearl Calleja, told Lovin Malta.

This interdisciplinary work was created and choreographed by Żfin Malta’s artistic director Paolo Mangiola in collaboration with Indian composer Abhishek Sekri, Maltese visual artist Matthew Attard, light designer Moritz Zavan Stockle, costume designer Louie Noir and dramaturg Victor Jacono.

The idea behind the piece stems from the tendency that humans have of archiving things as a response to some sort of imminent doom rather than repairing the damage that’s been done.

It explores the possibilities of what humans select and conserve as essential elements to protect and preserve life on earth.

“The main thought behind the piece is how, as humans, we immediately think of archiving because we know we are destroying the planet. We do this instead of repairing the damage that we’ve already done,” Calleja explained

“This particular work was inspired by the ‘Svalbard Seed Vault’ where millions of seed varieties from all over the world are safeguarded in case of an apocalyptic event or catastrophe.”

“Throughout the piece, us dancers go through a journey together with the audience, questioning what we should bring into the future and what we choose to conserve from the past.”

The ten dancers will be set in a bunker or shelter as they await for something to finish. In that space, they will think about what they could bring with them to the future in order to rebuild.

The featured dancers will be Pearl Calleja, Lidia Caricasole, Tara Dalli, Felix Deepen, Nik Folini, Jérémie Lafon, Lotte La Haye, Keith Micallef, Simon Riccardi-Zani and Amber Van Veen.

On Reefs and Eroded Lands will be premiering this Friday at 7.30pm, there will be two more shows on 22nd and 23rd October at the Valletta Campus Theatre of the University of Malta.
