Abstract Dreams And Community Deeds: Vincent Borg Shines In Fgura
76-year-old Vincent Borg has long been a pillar of the Fgura community, combining a career in education with a passion for art and the integration of persons with disabilities.
Born and raised in Valletta, Borg moved to Fgura in 1973 after getting married. Shortly after completing his apprenticeship at the Malta Drydocks, he began teaching technical design in secondary schools and later contributed to the vocational training sector.
In 1993, Borg was seconded to the newly founded Eden Foundation, where he launched Malta’s first “Supported Employment” program, helping young people with intellectual disabilities enter the workforce. His dedication continued as he managed the Foundation’s services and later worked within the Ministries of Education and Social Policy to further support the inclusion of persons with disabilities.
For his extensive community work, Borg was awarded the “Ħajr il-Fgura” honour by the Local Council in 2020. His contributions include assisting with the construction of the new Fgura church, where he designed and oversaw the installation of the decorative glass and the supporting steel structure, coordinating the importation of coloured glass from abroad.
Alongside his professional and community commitments, Borg practiced graphic design, contributing to the parish newsletter “Leħen il-Fgura”. This involvement led the parish priest at the time, Fr. Guido Micallef O.Carm., to invite him to design the church’s decorative glass.
Approaching retirement, Borg pursued his lifelong interest in art, attending classes at the School of Art in Valletta and earning a Diploma in Fine Arts at the age of 69.
Drawn to abstract art, he discovered Russian avant-garde movements such as Suprematism and Constructivism, whose focus on geometric forms and modern materials like steel and glass influenced his style. This, combined with his architectural and geometric background, led him to specialise in Geometric Abstraction.
In the latest edition of “Ħiliet il-Fgurin” (“Fgura Talents”), several preliminary designs for the church’s decorative glass, created by Borg over forty years ago, are being exhibited publicly for the first time.
His artwork reveals the evolution of his colourful, geometric designs, thoughtfully simplified to suit the church’s modern architecture while conveying meaningful symbolism.
The exhibition also features a collection of Borg’s artworks from the past decade, showcasing his preference for unpainted creations and his ongoing exploration of different media. His work aims to spark the viewer’s imagination, reflecting the artist’s enthusiasm for experimentation and discovery.
Vincent Borg’s journey exemplifies a rare blend of community dedication, artistic innovation, and lifelong learning, leaving a lasting legacy in Fgura and beyond.
Borg’s latest exhibition is available for viewing at the Fgura Local Council until 1st November.
