Alex Dalli’s Dell U Dawl: A Journey Through Light and Shadow

Maltese contemporary artist Alex Dalli is back with a powerful solo exhibition, ‘Dell u Dawl’, now on at The Phoenicia Malta.
Known for his emotive minimalism, Dalli’s new collection is a deeply personal reflection on hardship, healing, and hope. Curated by Prof. Charlene Vella, the exhibition is running from 4th to 29th April at the Phoenicia’s Palm Court Lounge.
At the heart of Dell u Dawl — which translates to Shadow and Light — is Dalli’s exploration of the delicate balance between darkness and illumination.
His textured, abstract compositions are layered with quiet intensity, transforming simplicity into depth, absence into presence.
“Through my art, I try to express what words cannot. In moments of darkness, I have sought light — not just visually, but spiritually,” Dalli says. “This exhibition is my way of sharing that journey, showing that even in the bleakest times, hope remains.”
Inspired by both natural and architectural forms, Dalli’s work often includes scratched textures, representing emotional excavation and inner transformation.
In some pieces, he uses gold accents — subtle touches that represent light in darkness, and the enduring presence of grace.
This latest exhibition is also a testament to the artist’s Catholic faith, which played a key role in guiding him through recent years of personal difficulty. Rather than turning away from pain, Dell u Dawl confronts it — and then gently illuminates a path forward.
Dalli has exhibited widely in Malta and abroad, and is celebrated for his ability to evoke emotion through restraint, offering viewers a meditative, almost spiritual experience.
Whether you’re an art enthusiast or simply looking for a quiet space to reflect, Dell u Dawl is a moving exhibition that speaks to the resilience of the human spirit — and the beauty that can emerge from even the darkest places.
