Eight-Legged Horse Statue Proposed On ODZ Land In Gozo

An eight-legged horse bronze statue has been proposed on ODZ land in the limits of Żebbuġ in Gozo, leading to the owner’s relative objecting strongly.

The application was filed by John Borg on behalf of the Gozo Ministry, along with architect Christina Said in Triq is-Sagħtrija.

The eight-legged horse was designed by local contemporary artist Austin Camilleri, who is well-known for his Zieme and Neil Agius statue.

Apart from the statue proposal raising questions on land ownership, the area also falls within ODZ and forms part of the Żebbuġ coastline.

“That’s private property, it belongs to my mother. How can this individual John Borg ask for a permit on someone else’s property? We strongly object to this monument,” one representation said.

“This is a private area. Were the owners informed? Did they sign for approval of the monument? What is the scope of the monument?” another said.

The proposed area for the statue is the same one which had a stone spiral back in 2020, with the land owners having cleared it up as it was done without their consent.
