A new contemporary space has cropped up on Malta’s sister island. Gozo Contemporary is the brainchild of renowned artist Norbert Attard, the founder of Valletta Contemporary. He has inaugurated the space with a solo show of his own, called “Soap To Think With”.

It involves a breadth of multi-media work spanning just over two and a half years in the making. The show’s works and catalogue will interrogate three driving themes: the Covid-19 pandemic, political and financial corruption in Malta, and the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

When: Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday – 3-8pm

Where: 11, Triq Mongur, Gharb, Gozo

2. Oikos Logia / R Gallery

R Gallery is bidding farewell to its latest international group exhibition this weekend with two diary-worthy events. Oikos Logia is a 10-artist exhibition exploring the entrails of the human-habitat crisis. On Saturday, the gallery will present the finissage (closing event), for which the artists will be present.

On Sunday 9th April, the gallery welcomes an eclectic sonic installation-performance by opensound.network. Facilitated by field recording, live composition, archival sound and text contributions by Noah Fabri, this is an exploration of the late-night Sliema lullaby.

Where: R Gallery 24, Triq Tigne, Sliema

When: Saturday 8th April: Finissage – 1-5pm

Sunday 9th April, opensound.network event 8-9pm

3. Prehistorja / When The Moon Waxes Red / Spazju Kreattiv

Spazju Kreattiv are showing two shows that you shouldn’t miss if you’re in the capital.

On the first level, there is Enrique Tabone’s Prehistorija. Awaken your mind, body and spirit by delving into pre-historic Malta and Gozo, through a new fresh feminist lens.

On the second level, there’s an enigmatic group show called When The Moon Waxes Red.

This sprawling exhibition brings together international artists and collectives to address the imbalance between human activities to extract resources and colonial ideologies, justifying the protection of property over people and nature’s degradation, by using ecofeminism as a point of departure.

Where: Spazju Kreattiv, Pjazza Kastilja Pope Pius V Street Il-Belt Valletta, VLT 1030

4. Ex Vuoto / Rootz Bar

Ex-Vuoto is an exhibition by a multidisciplinary artist is-Sinjurina. The work is inspired by her time in Florence during lockdown in 2021, where she came across neglected and abandoned bags of lace, and reimagined and recontextualised the craft of anonymous artisans into contemporary textile arts.

The exhibition will be held at Rootz, meaning you get to have fantastic food and cocktails while looking at contemporary art.

Where: Rootz,  11, Strait Street Valletta

5. Heart Of Matter / Kamra Ta’ Fuq

Artist Victor Agius is presenting a series of earth paintings and stoneware ceramics at the Southern art gem Kamra Ta’ Fuq. Curated by Melanie Erixon, Agius’ work focuses on how man uses material around him in ritual to satisfy his spiritual needs, using terra rosa, ceramics, pigments, cement and clay.

Where: Kamra Ta’ Fuq, 88 San Bazilju L-Imqabba, MQB 1012

6. Art Exhibition / Zak’s Gallery

A new space has opened in Valletta, and artist Lara Anne Vella is kicking things off with a series of paintings she amde especially for the show. Check out Lara’s colourful style and academy techniques in this little new gem opposite Fat Harry’s Pub.

Where: 2, 11D, St Zackary Street Valletta

7. Rituals of Passage / Valletta Contemporary

Rituals of Passage is a site-specific exhibition, a co-creative project between Ryan Falzon, Aaron Bezzina, Alexandra Fraser, Yasmine Akondo, Mladen Hadžić, and Stefan Kolgen.

As the title suggests, the show contemplates rituals and motions that form part of everyday life and soothe us, especially in post-pandemic times.

Where: Valletta Contemporary, 15, 16, 17 East Street Valletta, VLT 1253
