A new, local exhibition called The Vocabulary of Maltese Style has just been announced, and the event will feature items of clothing that show the influence of Maltese fashion both locally and internationally.
Curated by top local designer Luke Azzopardi, the exhibition will open its doors for free to the public at the end of this month. From the 26th of June right up till the 5th of July, the House of Representatives in Valletta will be home to several iconic pieces throughout Malta’s fashion history over the last 100 years.
With design by Andrew Borg Wirth and live défilé by Carina Camilleri, featuring the style icons Charles and Ron, the event will “seek to reveal the links between the fashion of mainland Europe and that created in Malta.”
Azzopardi has said he hopes this exhibition will “help strengthen the legitimacy of Maltese fashion design and in a broader sense, the study of Maltese creativity”.
This event will be a local first, as it positions fashion and couture as an integral part of the history of the applied arts.
“Data collected and articles presented provide concrete examples of how the Maltese lived not in a desert on the fringe of peasantry as often hinted at in exhibitions of traditional costumes, but in an informed society that was deeply rooted in a great awareness of contemporary trends” said Azzopardi
You can find out more about the event by following their Facebook page. This exhibition was created by the office of the Hon. Marlene Mizzi, MEP. It is also supported by S&D group, Arts Council Malta, Case Rocca Piccola, camillerparismode ltd. and Heritage Malta.
