Exhibitions Envy: 5 Art Shows To Catch In Malta This Weekend

Malta is bursting with fresh art shows, so each week we’re rounding up a select number of them for you to get your dose of culture this weekend.
Here are five exhibitions to sink your teeth into:
1. BACKLOT, Charlie Cauchi

BACKLOT at Spazju Kreattiv
What is our own relationship between the reality we live in as Maltese people and the artifice that is projected onto us and, in turn, onto screens, big or small?
Charlie Cauchi explores this loaded question in BACKLOT, a new exhibition by the filmmaker-artist. She uses video work, photographic images, built structures, and more to break down the complex possibilities of Malta’s on-screen cinematic (mis)representation.
When: Until 25th June 2023
Where: Space C, Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta
2. 24. 46. 50. 97., International Group Show
A collective exhibition featuring Carlos Garaicoa, Gerold Miller, Jurgen Ostarhild, and Yeoul Son with artistic direction by Norbert Francis Attard.
The four artists included in the exhibition push the boundaries of the aesthetic by either experimenting with media, incorporating new technologies and digital realities, or addressing social, political, and economic issues. By pushing the limits of the known, the artists bring new ideas, perspectives, and experiences to the forefront.
When: Until 15th June 2023
Where: Valletta Contemporary, Valletta
3. Event & Being, Norbert Francis Attard

It’s the last week of Event & Being, a solo exhibition by Norbert Francis Attard at R Gallery. The show involves culturally-defined moments in contemporary Malta, captured by the art pioneer in some 110 works during the last two years.
Curated by Julien Vinet, the gallery will host a finissage (closing party) to celebrate the last day.
When: Until Saturday 10th June
Where: R Gallery, Sliema
4. Il-Ħabba Tal-Għajn, Alex Dalli
Il-Ħabba Tal-Għajn, a solo exhibition by Alex Dalli, follows the artist’s painterly journey from the figurative into the abstract.
Sitting at the cusp between the Modern and the Contemporary, Dalli’s practice has evolved, over 45 years, from a desire to escape the difficult conditions of childhood to a deeper concern with the spiritual in art.
With poetic interventions by Michael Zammit and curated by Gabriel Zammit.
When: Until 28th June
Where: Malta Society of Arts, Valletta
5. The sculptor & bronze smith retrospective, Joseph Chetcuti

Four years after his untimely death, the work of sculptor and bronzesmith Joseph Chetcuti is being showcased in a retrospective exhibition at MUŻA, the National Museum of Art in Valletta.
More than a retrospective, this exhibition is an introduction to an artist who was seminal to transforming the landscape of public art commissions in Malta and Gozo. The show is curated by Lisa Gwen.
When: Until 25th June
Where: MUŻA, Valletta
