Teatru Malta is just days away from opening its much-anticipated production of Ġaħan at Fort St Elmo, premiering on Thursday 28th August, a date of special significance as it also marks the birthday of the late Francis Ebejer (born 28th August 1925).

This production is an adaptation of Ebejer’s final play, ‘Il-Ġaħan ta’ Binġemma.’ The piece now returns in a bold production set to resonate with modern-day audiences, continuing Ebejer’s mission of making theatre relevant, daring and alive.

Remarkably, the play was staged only once, 39 years ago, making this revival a milestone for Maltese theatre. Audiences can expect a few surprises that marry spectacle with Maltese literature and theatre, reaffirming Teatru Malta’s commitment to breathing life into iconic works by Maltese greats.

The cast features a stellar line-up of Malta’s finest performers, including Paul Portelli in the role of Ġaħan, Jacob Piccinino as Richard and Michela Farrugia as Selima along with Rebecca Camilleri, Philip Leone-Ganado, Sandie von Brockdorff, Christian Scicluna, Charlotte Grech, Mario Micallef, Lee-N Abela and Steve Hili.

At its core, Ġaħan is more than a fool. He is a mirror held up to Maltese society, exposing its contradictions, politics and humanity with biting wit and unflinching honesty.

The production is directed and adapted by Sean Buhagiar, with an exceptional creative team including music by Noah Fabri, set design by Romualdo Moreti, choreography by Rebecca Camilleri, costumes and make-up by Klonn and is-Sinjurina, and lighting design by Chris Gatt.

Ġaħan is a Teatru Malta production in collaboration with Heritage Malta and Fondazzjoni Ċelebrazzjonijiet Nazzjonali (FĊN) and is supported by Arts Council Malta
