Acclaimed artist Stephen Saliba is set to unveil his latest pop-up exhibition Freedom in Simplicity at a non-gallery venue located at 119 Valley Road, Msida.

The exhibition will run from May 13th to May 26th, showcasing Saliba’s abstract and minimalist artwork, inspired by Joan Miró’s philosophy of achieving maximum intensity with minimal means.

Under the guidance of Maestro Pawlu Grech and renowned ceramist George Muscat, Saliba has honed his artistic skills in various techniques, finding inspiration in the natural world and human experiences.

His background in environmental science lends him a unique perspective on the creative process, combining scientific observation with artistic expression.

Freedom in Simplicity features abstract paintings, ceramic works, and environmental installations, with the artist’s focus on minimalistic compositions and strong, bold colours.

Saliba’s large-scale paintings draw the viewer into the intimate interplay between microscopic cell structures and their abstract counterparts, exploring themes of apprehension and passion through the use of stark white spaces punctuated by powerful blacks and vibrant reds.

Saliba’s ceramic pieces emphasize the fragility of the human soul, using the allegory of soft clay being molded by life’s challenges to create unique, individual forms.

His artistry in ceramics involves playing with form and texture while limiting the use of color, revealing the organic essence of each piece without distraction.

Known for his environmentally focused installations, Saliba’s work often ventures beyond gallery walls, placing sculptures and installations in picturesque surroundings to draw attention to environmental issues.

His most notable installation, The Passage of Time, is a testament to his commitment to both art and environmentalism.

The exhibition’s namesake, Freedom in Simplicity, is a reflection of Joan Miró’s belief that true freedom is found in simplicity. Saliba’s minimalist approach to art encourages viewers to engage with the meditative, timeless space of his works, following lines with no beginning or end.

The artist maintains that the impact of his art should be instantaneous, either striking the viewer or not, with no middle ground.

Freedom in Simplicity also serves as a continuation and evolution of Saliba’s personal style, which he developed and exhibited in Brussels years ago.

Using industrial surfaces for his paintings, the artist adds unique textures to each piece, further solidifying his signature style and artistic identity.
