Gozo’s Iconic Landmarks Reimagined In Mosaic At Il-Ħaġar Museum
Il-Ħaġar Museum in Victoria, Gozo, will be celebrating Mary Portelli’s MUŻAjk, showcasing art that breathes new life into Gozo’s beloved landscapes.
The exhibition will present no fewer than 45 pieces, including presentations of the Gran Castello, Comino Tower, St Anthony’s Battery, Kenuna Tower, Gordan Lighthouse, Sopu Tower, and the Carnival Monument in Nadur.
Portelli’s distinctive approach blends artistry with craftsmanship, as she painstakingly cuts ceramic tiles to emulate the structures of these iconic sites. Each work is set against richly textured backdrops of tesserae composed of broken crockery, local stone, smalti, shells, mug handles, and other unique materials—transforming familiar architecture into vibrant mosaics.
Curated by Marika Azzopardi, MUŻAjk will be inaugurated on Saturday 13th September at 7.30pm. All are welcome to attend the official opening. The exhibition will remain open until 16 November and may be visited during Il-Ħaġar Museum’s regular opening hours: 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday to Sunday. As always, admission is free.
