Il-Qalba: Local Creatives Launch New Collection Celebrating Malta’s Heritage

Local creatives Form Matters and design concept store Eclecticist have recently launched a collaborative exhibition called Il-Qalba.

Borne out of a passion for product design paired with a fascination for local architectural heritage, Il-Qalba is an eight-piece collection consisting of intentionally curious wall reliefs, bookends and ashtrays that explore the rapidly disappearing features of Maltese architecture.

The project draws inspiration from local terrazzo and different architectural features that are prominently found on the facades of townhouses built in the 20th century in core local villages.

The intent is to create a sense of preservation of this typical Maltese architectural style by embodying it in the exhibited objects.

The pivotal initiation of this work was Richard England’s poignant statement that highlights that “in order to build the new, we must of necessity understand the old and use it as a springboard for the future.”

The team behind Il-Qalba, Neal Vella, Sera Galea and Enrika Pizzuto, identified the need for an exploration of the state of our current surroundings, and what the buildings in our local landscape are dictating about our community.

Predominantly, this is where Form Matter’s and Eclecticist core investigation lies. With this project, Form Matters and Eclecticist attempt to pay a timeless homage to local architecture through purposefully formed art and sculptural pieces characterised by a unique craftsmanship process.

The exhibition kicked off last week and it’s on show at Eclecticist in Attard.
