The call for applications for the Apprenticeship Scheme has been opened, with an investment of €234,000 aimed at further professionalising and expanding the cultural and creative sectors.

The first call, targeting individuals or entities involved in the creative field who wish to engage apprentices, opens on 3rd June, with applications being accepted until 16th August. The second call will be for apprentices who can benefit from the scheme, with this call being announced later this year.

The Minister for the Arts, Owen Bonnici said, “Once again, we will continue to fulfill our electoral promises through investments that not only encourage creative professionals to further develop their skills but also provide support to enterprises operating in the cultural and creative sectors. Thanks to initiatives like this, managed by the Arts Council Malta, we are directing efforts towards investment, promotion, and facilitation for the development of the knowledge, skills, and competencies that cultural and creative practitioners need to flourish in their sectors.”

This first call for applications aims to support self-employed individuals, entities registered with the Malta Business Register, voluntary organisations registered with the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations, and cooperatives registered with the Cooperatives Board who wish to host apprentices in the cultural and creative sectors to assist in their professional development. Eligible applicants include those involved in the cultural and creative industries, digital technology, and design industries, as well as those involved in craftsmanship.

Mary Anne Cauchi, Director of Funds and Strategy at the Arts Council Malta, explained how the scheme reflects efforts towards greater professionalisation of the cultural and creative sectors by promoting an entrepreneurial culture among creatives and by enhancing their technical and vocational skills.

“One of the main goals of the Arts Council Malta’s strategy is to support education, capacity building, professional development, and knowledge exchange to empower individuals to thrive in their cultural and creative practice. The Apprenticeship Scheme continues to implement this vision by providing opportunities to support the professional development of creative professionals,” said Cauchi.

This fund will cover up to 100% of project costs, with a maximum limit of €18,000 per apprenticeship. Selected apprenticeships will commence between 1st January and 31st December, 2025. For more information about the Apprenticeship Scheme, visit the Arts Council Malta website.
