The Minister for the Arts, Owen Bonnici, announced the launch of the National Charter for the Status of the Artist during his address at the third edition of the State of the Arts – Malta’s National Symposium.

The aim of this Charter is to provide a dynamic framework of reference for any legislation, policy or initiative that has a direct or indirect impact on the cultural and creative sector.

This Charter cohesively describes the social, economic and legal status of Maltese artists, as well as the necessary legislative standards and actions required to protect and enhance such a status in the Maltese islands.

“I am pleased to note that today we are hosting the third edition of this important cultural symposium, which has truly become a pillar in shaping our creative sectors. This national event plays a crucial role in shaping the future generations of artists and creatives, leaving a lasting legacy on the cultural scene,” said Minister Bonnici.

Minister Bonnici explained how the launch of the National Charter is one of the priorities in the strategy of the Arts Council Malta, inspired by UNESCO’s Recommendations on the Status of Artists and its subsequent developments. It supports and encourages working conditions where artists and cultural and creative practitioners can develop their ideas and thrive in their aspirations.

Minister Bonnici further elaborated that the National Charter was preceded by a thorough public consultation process, providing a dynamic framework of reference for any legislation, policy or initiative that directly or indirectly affects artists and the cultural and creative sectors. It ensures that every action aligns with the long-term vision to enhance the status of artists in Malta.

“This symposium is immensely important as it allows us to foster intersectoral collaboration and consultation with artists and creative practitioners gathered under the auspices of the Arts Council Malta. Meaningful consultation and dialogue with all stakeholders are essential to ensure that our policies and approaches are shaped by those directly involved and perhaps even those indirectly involved, in the creative sectors,” The Executive Chairman of the Arts Council Malta, Albert Marshall, stated.

Mr Marshall continued that what took place today, as part of this Symposium, is a direct result of this approach, where the Council is launching the National Charter for the Status of the Artist following extensive consultation with the public and various stakeholders.
