‘Go Fund Me Or Go Fund Myself’: Maltese Artist Launching New Valletta Performance Next Week
Maltese performance artist and photographer Charlene Galea is due to launch a fresh new performance next week in Valletta.
Go Fund Me or Go Fund Myself is an exhibition set to combine text-based paintings, photographs, and the artists’ performances which discuss the topic of the working life, held at IAM Contemporary in Valletta.
The exhibition will explore work, the uniform, as well as the artist’s body, the joy and struggles, and what an artist needs to do in order to survive while juggling more than one job on the side.
The performances will be held next week on 25th and 26th November, where Charlene will be performing a live improvisation depicting her emotions and words related to what working signifies for her.
“What is work then? What are funds? Who are the patrons and what do they expect out of me? A profile picture when I apply and a CV. What profile is considered reputable and good enough for entry into the fund’s system?” Charlene questioned in her artist statement.
Currently, Charlene, known on social media as @rixac, has been taking artistic development training in performance in Budapest and was sponsored for a small part of her journey for the first time ever.
However, she has been been working three different jobs throughout 2022 to ensure she can make this training happen, including, tons of nude modeling classes, a token lady in nightclubs, and as well as a waitress, besides working on this exhibition and having an online presence.
She explained how this often equals burnout and a lack of creativity at certain points.
“Is it worth going through all this for the sake of this art world?” she questions.
Presented in the form of a manifesto, the artworks are honest yet also come with a pinch of humour towards the art world.
Apart from the performances, an additional part will be dedicated to interviewing the artist, where the most “absurd way of questioning and interrogating the artists will take place” by the curator, Bobb Attard.
