Maltese Artist’s ‘No-Frill’ Exhibition Is ‘A Cry From The Deepest Abyss’

An exhibition that will put the human being at the forefront of everything will soon be on display in Valletta.

“The work is a cry from the deepest abyss of those who are frustrated by force-fed living standards and of those who long for simple freedom. But especially of those who choose to think,” Etienne Farrell, the curator, expressed in a press release.

The Maltese artist, Mark Mallia, called his exhibition ‘Manimal’, which is an amalgamation of the words ‘man’ and ‘animal’.

Mallia questions and attempts to understand the human experience, and all its intricacies – his powerful artwork captures the profound emotions experienced by individuals who carry the burdens of modern-day society.

His impactful creations particularly delve into the challenges posed by the era of social media. This exhibition is a bit different from his usual sarcastic style, ‘Manimal’ is a blunt and honest exhibition.

“This is almost reminiscent, in a psychological way, to Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Still, inside the wall, the dirty conscience of not being able to please everyone eats the artist from the inside,” Farrell stated.

“Reaching a new milestone in his artistic career, Mallia blends his ethnographic observations with artistic expression to produce work that is not only imbued with meaning, but also cuts the flesh in its straightforward, no-frill rendition.”

“A virtual anthropologist on social media but also in real life, Mark Mallia questions and attempts to understand the many different aspects of the human experience,” Farrell expressed.

‘Manimal’ will run from 16th June, to 22nd June, at Bozza Hamra, right next to Trabuxu in Strada Stretta, Valletta.
