Maltese Band To Represent Island In Massive International Military Tattoo In Switzerland
Tattoo ceremonies are still very big all over the world. No, not the skin kind, the military kind. The performance takes its name from the 17th century Dutch phrase for signals given out by barracks’ drummers and trumpeters to neighbouring innkeepers, but the musical part of the tradition is still very much alive nowadays. Now, one Maltese band is being given the opportunity of a lifetime during an international ceremony celebrating just this.
The Basel Tattoo is an annual event where bands from all over the world meet up to organise parades and spectacular performances. Last Monday, the Marsa Scouts Pipes and Drums arrived at the international at the Switzerland convention, where they were invited to perform alongside other countries at a meet-up spread over 14 days.
The Basel Tattoo is the second largest open air event of its kind and is totally taken care of by the Swiss Armed Forces, so we know it’s a big deal.
There’s marching bands, drum and fife players, dancers, formations and massed pipes and drums.
Apart from the Marsa Scouts Pipes and Drums representing Malta, there will also bands from South Africa, Canada, Switzerland, Britain and American.
This isn’t the first time that the Marsa Scouts represented our country in an event like this. Their first event was back in 2014 where they took part in the Walled City Tattoo in Northern Ireland.
