Maltese Contemporary Artist Etienne Farrell’s Fallen Angel II Sells For €35,000 At Auction

Maltese multimedia artist Etienne Farrell has achieved a significant milestone in her career after her artwork Fallen Angel II sold for €35,000 at the recent SiGMA Euro-Med Charity Auction.
“This work is the second in a series of three, created as a tribute to my late colleague, Mark Mallia,” she said, speaking to MaltaCEOs.mt. “Mark believed he was a fallen angel; hence the title. I wanted to honour him by portraying the way I understood him.” a self-portrait that inspired both the title and the theme of the works.
Farrell took to social media to share her emotions after the auction, “It sold for €35,000, my Fallen Angel II. This photo was taken at the beginning of the evening. I was looking much happier towards the end.”
Etienne Farrell, born in 1974, has established herself as one of Malta’s foremost contemporary artists. Her body of work moves fluidly across disciplines, from painting and sculpture to installation, video art, interactive pieces, and photography.
Based in her Fgura studio, Farrell balances her artistic practice with academia, lecturing within the Department of Digital Arts at the University of Malta. She is a graduate of Università Ca’ Foscari in Venice as well as the University of Malta, grounding her work in both international and local perspectives.
Over the years, her creations have been showcased in several European cities, including Arles, Paris, Brussels, and Luxembourg, and are also represented in the national collection of Heritage Malta.
One of her more recent projects, Bandiera Bajda, transformed Valletta’s Melita Street into a thought-provoking installation of white garments. The work sparked dialogue on themes of fatherhood through public discussions and interviews, with its findings later presented to Dr Lydia Abela.
The success of Fallen Angel II not only represents a meaningful tribute but also signals a new chapter for Farrell. As she takes on fresh commissions and expands her international collaborations, her role as a versatile and innovative force in Malta’s contemporary art scene continues to grow.
