A Maltese contemporary gallery is set to make a huge international debut in Berlin, with a 40-artist warehouse show happening this September.

R Gallery will unveil FAR REACH from 13th to 17th September 2023, in a sprawling 9,000-square-metre warehouse called MaHalla, which coincides with Berlin Art Week, a huge art festival that takes place in galleries all over the Eastern city.

Bringing together artists based in Malta and Berlin, the exhibition brings the two art scenes into one artistic microcosm in one of the most notorious art scenes in Europe.

FAR REACH is about world-building. Not as a passive, silent affair but as an essential vehicle of hope to propel forward. In this exhibition, 40 artists from distinct contemporary practices present shards of their inner worlds, out.

Some turn their backs completely to the physical world, working within abstract strokes, like Mario Abela and Ryan Falzon. Others engage with contemporary issues, the boiling of our climate, like the irony-doused installation of Tom Van Malderen, the question of bodies at home like Anna Calleja, or the apocalyptic beach scenes of Benjamin Pfau.

The boxed boundaries of society, where bodies are vehicles to be regulated, are criticised in works like the colossal patterns stamped with nonsensical visas by Julien Vinet, or  Drawing my eye with my eyes with the eye tracker, 2021 video work by Matthew Attard, who is representing Malta at the next Venice Biennale.
