This Maltese Photographer Is Stuffing Something Strange In Celebrities’ Mouths
Maltese photographer Steven Levi Vella has been stirring up the art scene with his newest photography project, “Pronounce”. The MCAST alumni graduated with a BA in Moving Art in 2016, and briefly flirted with the idea of pursuing a degree in law, but quit to pursue his true calling behind the lens. With this new project, we’re pretty sure Vella made the right call.
“Pronounce” captures celebrities and various public personalities stuffing their mouth with an octopus.

The octopus has been considered a sexual symbol for generations in Japan, and the mouth – well, pretty much everywhere else. During his university days, Vella studied the sexualisation of cephalopods in Japanese culture, and from that point the project just kept on growing.
Why in the mouth, though, you ask?
Vella believes that the mouth holds the key to an individual’s sexual expectation. It also represents the inexplicable duality that an everyday human feature holds in attracting others. It’s a sexual juxtaposition, of sorts.
But then again, it’s art. So you decide.

After releasing shots of Valentina Rossi and Laurence Xuereb, Vella revealed that more instalments are on the way. We can’t wait to see who’s up next!
