Maltese Tattoo Artists Need To Undergo New Training Course From Next Year
Tattoo artists in Malta will have to take a new training course of 45 hours starting from next year in accordance with a new health reform, the Health Ministry has announced.
The Public Health Superintendent, Dr. Chairmaine Gauci, said that tattoo artists make use of needles, and that this increases the risk of the spread of diseases like Hepatitis A and B, as well as HIV, which is transmitted through the blood.
The course will be taught by other trained tattoo artists who have at least five years experience. It will cover topics like equipment sterilisation, the use and disposal of needles, general cleanliness, knowledge of different inks, and skin preparation as well as knowledge of infectious diseases.
Keeping client records will also be taught in the course.
“When a person applies to work as a tattoo artist, he/she will need the course which covers the trade necessities,” said Dr. Gauci. If a tattoo artist does not have the course certificate, they will not be able to get the license to work as a tattoo artist.
Tattoos are popular in Malta as a way of keeping someone or something close to you at all times, as well as an expression of personality. Religious figures as well as images of family members are common tattoos on the island.
