Slow fashion has been on the rise in Malta over the last few years, with the repurposing of clothing and thrifting becoming even more trendy.

And you can’t be in the scene without having heard of Zoe Camilleri, the wonderful person behind the one-woman brand Zowij.Makes.

“I would like to introduce you to Zowij.Makes, a one-woman-owned brand that creates sustainable, handmade, one-of-a-kind clothing out of preloved and vintage fabrics,” Zoe told Lovin Malta.

“We aim to offer an alternative to the problematic fast fashion brands that dominate the fashion industry,” she explained.

“I source most of the materials from charity or thrift stores, or directly from people who want to get rid of fabric they might have. Friends and people who follow Zowij.Makes have started to alert me when there are fabrics looking for a new home,” Zoe said.

“But in general, I repurpose items like curtains, table cloths, pillow cases. That sort of thing. And as much as possible, I stick to natural fabrics like cotton and linens. I love the idea of wearing something that comes with a past but is re-invented into something that feels new and current,” she expressed.

Zowij.Makes is committed to three very simple things: reducing waste through the creation of repurposed clothing, a diversity in sizes, and brand transparency.

“The brand works mostly on a custom order basis, which means that almost every garment is made specifically for the customer, allowing us to cater for a wide range of sizes.”

This also means that almost everything created is immediately sold, creating less clothing that might end up thrown away in a landfill.

Zoe expressed her wish for everyone to get back to those times when you had to order clothes and wait for them until they were made.

“Wait long enough, you almost forget you ordered them and then when you finally receive them, you’re so happy because they were made specifically for you, in someone’s home, using what was once someone else’s curtains. And most importantly, they make you feel cool.”

“But being a slow fashion business means thinking way ahead to make enough items in time. And my assistant Julius isn’t much help, even though he has four paws,” she said cheekily.

Zowij.Makes also recently launched their new website, where you can find her latest products and any information you might need to place your order and check them out on Instagram here.
