The countdown is on! Malta’s latest cultural gem, the Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS), is finally set to open its doors to the public on 27th October 2024. Housed in the stunningly restored 17th-century Ospizio complex, MICAS is a breathtaking blend of historical architecture and modern design.

Kicking things off with a bang, MICAS will host an incredible exhibition by celebrated Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos. Her vibrant, large-scale installations will light up the four-story galleries of this unique venue, combining contemporary art with Malta’s rich historical backdrop.

Here’s a sneak peek at what you can expect:

But the real magic? The venue itself. The newly designed structure is capped with a striking steel-beam roof that perfectly marries old and new, creating an open, naturally lit space that lets the history of the building shine through. The steel roof elegantly extends into the facade, symbolising the fusion of Malta’s past with its exciting cultural future.

MICAS represents a huge leap forward for Malta’s cultural scene, and it’s more than just an art space. “This is a community project, reclaiming historic fortifications that are now returned to the public, enriching Malta’s cultural fabric while attracting international artists and audiences,” as MICAS Executive Chair Phyllis Muscat puts it.

If you want a sneak peek, head over to MICAS’s on 27th October – an unmissable chance to explore both the stunning venue and Vasconcelos’s dazzling work.
