Ode To Summer: Last Chance To Visit All-Female Collective Exhibition In Valletta
It’s your last chance to visit an all-female collective exhibition currently held in Valletta, celebrating the summer months as they come to a close.
‘Ode to Summer’ is a body of work curated by Justine Balzan Demajo, featuring works by artists Lydia Cecil, Tina Mifsud, and Sue Bencini, currently on show at Studio 57 in Valletta.
“As summer starts to slowly fade, with evenings getting cooler and shorter days in sight, we find ourselves clinging onto sentiments, memories that are quintessential and evocative of a Mediterranean summer,” the curatorial note reads.
“We are left with a certain distinct bittersweetness, repeatedly felt year after year like an annual reminder, as we transition into the next season. Ode to Summer embodies this emotional, psychological and sensory notion. When summer comes to mind, naturally so does the sea, however, food for instance plays a central role in our society.”
“As does light, the beaming warm light, distinct to this season, that typically bounces off limestone walls, also changes in colour as autumn sets in.”
Studio 57’s all-female collective features painters Cecil and Mifsud, and budding new sculptor Bencini were chosen to represent this concept through their work.
“All possessing different techniques, disciplines and moods, each artist will leave you yearning or reflecting on the summer gone by.”
“Be it a slice of warm Maltese bread smothered with oil and sweet tomatoes, or lazy days in the sun, or a still evening with friends, these artworks are sure to rouse the senses and leave you feeling reminiscent.”
Cecil’s work is representational, based on studies from life. She delves into the character of a portrait sitter, and delights in arranging contemporary still lives. As she moves between London and Malta, the differing influences of the city and the Mediterranean provide backdrops for her figurative work.
Meanwhile, Mifsud is a self-taught artist who has embarked on a remarkable artistic journey, now celebrating her fifth solo exhibition at the young age of 29. Having spent two transformative years in Barcelona, sharing a studio with international artists, Tina has honed her unique artistic voice.
Her work is characterised by distinctive brushstrokes, rooted in meticulous documentation, personal experiences, and thorough research before translating her vision onto the canvas.
Bencini’s passion for creativity rooted her into her current profession as a jewellery fashion designer. However her eagerness to explore different creative skills led her to completing a clay building course at the Malta Society of Arts. Ode to Summer will be the first collective exhibition for this budding sculptor.
The collective exhibition launched on 20th September and will be open until 6th October.
