Pixels On A Picnic: Elisa Von Brockdorff Brings Light To Life In Valletta Exhibition

Local photographer Elisa von Brockdorff’s latest series of photographs, Pixels on a Picnic, is set to open at The Splendid in Strait Street, Valletta, this February.

Curated by Melanie Erixon, the exhibition explores the interplay of light, form, and materiality in an imaginative and dynamic way.

This new body of work marks a shift for von Brockdorff, who moves away from the minimalist lighting effects seen in her earlier projects to fully embrace light as the commanding presence in her compositions.

Through the use of analogue filters, reflective surfaces, and carefully chosen objects, von Brockdorff creates ambiguous visual narratives that blur the boundaries between reality and imagination.

The series highlights the active role of light, not just as an illuminating force but as a key subject in her work. The backgrounds, far from being passive, play an integral part in the scenes, while objects within the compositions take a more minimal role, acting as catalysts for the interaction of light, shadow, and reflection.

This experimental approach transforms ordinary spaces into vibrant, staged environments, offering viewers a fresh perspective on the beauty of everyday surroundings.

Von Brockdorff’s latest collection is an invitation to pause, observe, and rediscover the world around us with curiosity and wonder. Her meticulous approach to light and composition encourages audiences to explore the visual possibilities found in even the most mundane of objects.

Elisa von Brockdorff is a Malta-based visual artist and freelance photographer. She holds a Master’s Degree in Fine Art from the University for the Creative Arts in Canterbury, England, and a degree in Psychology, which informs her artistic practice.

She debuted her first solo photographic exhibition, Plastic Dreams, in 2012 at Lily Agius Gallery in Malta. Since then, her work has been showcased internationally in countries including England, Brussels, Italy, and Luxembourg.

The exhibition will run at The Splendid, Strait Street, Valletta, from the 7th to the 27th of February.
