Isabelle Bonnici expressed her deep gratitude to the artist who dedicated a piece of work to her son’s tragic death as well as her own courageous fight for justice for the Malta Biennale.

Italian artist Teresa Antignani was awarded the expert jury award for best work of the open call for her piece titled Deposition. She was given the Maltese falcon by the President of the Republic of Malta and rather than keeping it, decided to donate it to Bonnici.

“I didn’t win today, her courage won,” Antignani wrote on social media.

“As many of you know this work is dedicated to the story of Jean Paul Sofia and his mother’s fight Isabelle Bonnici for justice, to give voice to all the dead without a name of a system that focuses on profit and not on people’s lives.”

“It’s important that art can coincide with people’s lives, it’s important to keep fighting,” she concluded.

Meanwhile, Bonnici accompanied Antinagni to this ceremony and expressed her deep appreciation for the artist soon after.

“I cannot let this weekend pass and not publicly show my deep admiration and appreciation to two amazing souls Andrew Azzopardi and Teresa Antignani for honouring me and valuing my work,” a touching post read on Għal Jean Paul reads.

“I feel honoured that my precious son Jean Paul’s legacy will live on through safer workplaces and laws that bring more justice to all! I promise I will keep doing my duty so that my son’s death will never be in vain!”

Besides being an artist, Antignani is also an activist. Through her work, she cultivates an awareness about eco-feminist practices and grassroot activism for the defence of the land.

Her work is always endowed with an embodied dimension whereby the female body often becomes the lens through which reading and exposing environmental abuses; the hypocrisy of the power dynamics that surround the environmental struggle against energy giants and, ultimately, the ethical and political value of art.
