STRUTTURI: Thomas Scerri’s Multidisciplinary Take On Urban Space And Architecture

Thomas Scerri’s latest exhibition, STRUTTURI, is a thought-provoking exploration of architecture, space, and the urban environment, opening this weekend at il-Kamra ta’ Fuq in Mqabba.

This compelling body of work explores the relationship between architecture, space, and the urban environment, offering a fresh perspective on the impact of human intervention on our surroundings.

The work originates from photographs and studies of architectural features in various locations, capturing the interplay between built structures and their surrounding spaces.

These initial observations are deconstructed, analysed, and reinterpreted across multiple media. From photographs to three-dimensional sculptural forms, and finally to two-dimensional paintings, Scerri’s cyclical process allows the work to evolve beyond its origins.

The result is a series of reimagined spaces that exude clarity, order, and harmony—an intentional contrast to the chaos of contemporary urban sprawl.

STRUTTURI is more than an artistic exploration; it is a critique of Malta’s ongoing construction boom and its effect on the collective psyche.

Through his art, Scerri reflects a longing for cleaner, more breathable urban spaces that promote mental well-being. It invites viewers to consider the consequences of exploitative construction and envision a future where structure and serenity coexist.

Thomas Scerri, born in 1990, is a multimedia artist based in Cork and Malta. His work often examines the intricate relationship between the man-made and the natural, encouraging audiences to reflect on the impact of human intervention on the environment.

With a BFA and MFA in Digital Arts from the University of Malta, Scerri has exhibited locally and internationally over the past eight years.

Curated by Melanie Erixon, STRUTTURI is a must-see exhibition for anyone interested in the intersection of art, architecture, and environmental reflection.
